The following is a list of recommended vaccinations for travelling to Austria.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis Vaccine Only travellers who plan to visit Austria during the summer months and hike or camp in rural or forested areas that provide a habitat for the ticks that carry the virus should consider obtaining this vaccine. The areas mainly affected are in the states of Steiermark and Kärnten in southern Austria; the state of Upper Austria; areas to the south of the city of Vienna; and parts of the state of Burgenland in eastern Austria. Newly recognized areas include the areas around Mattsee, Wallersee and Thalgau, that are north of the city of Salzburg, the valleys of the rivers Inn, Isel and Ziller in the state of Tirol, and areas in the state of Vorarlberg, notably the surroundings of Feldkirch. This vaccine is available in Europe, Canada and Russia.
Hepatitis A Vaccine There is a low risk of exposure to hepatitis A for this country, however, the vaccination is recommended.
Hepatitis B Vaccine There is a low risk of infection with hepatitis B for this country, however, the vaccination is recommended.
Rabies Vaccine Rabies vaccination is recommended for travellers who may come in contact with bats (i. e. cavers, adventure travellers, researchers, and anyone working with bats).

Personal Safety

Travellers rarely experience safety and security problems in Austria, however, petty crime, such as pickpocketing, is common in tourist areas and crowded places like transportation hubs and tourist sites. Be alert in your surroundings, and ensure that your personal belongings, valuables, and travel documents are kept secure at all times. Theft on international trains travelling to and from Austria has increased. Keep luggage within sight.

Travellers planning on high-altitude mountaineering and ski trips should be aware that avalanches after snowfalls do occur and people have died in avalanches. The weather in alpine environments can be unpredictable. Travellers wishing to participate in high-altitude mountaineering or skiing should ensure that mountain rescue and evacuation are included in their travel insurance coverage. It is strongly recommended to hire a professional guide, to avoid hiking alone and to not leave established trails. Road travel may be challenging in winter due to severe weather and some mountain roads may close.

It is against the law to wear in a public place any clothing or object that conceals the face and makes facial features unrecognizable.

Same-sex sexual activity and civil partnership are both legal in Austria and discrimination based on sexual orientation is prohibited.
