Wildfires in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

Wildfires are reported from the Nagarkot area in the Kathmandu Valley. The Himalayan region has experienced the worst forest fires in years, with more than 2,000 hectares of area burned within the month of March. Wildfires are reported in 22 of Nepal’s 77 districts. Five people have died since January as a result of the fires. Air quality has dropped and was marked as “unhealthy” as of today (11 April).

Advice For Travellers

Avoid the affected areas. Travellers with chronic pre-existing heart and lung medical conditions may experience worsening of their conditions when exposed to air contaminated with dust and soot from the fires. These travellers should remain indoors, especially in air-conditioned places to avoid additional illness.
