Sudan: Troops Deployed in Darfur Following Violent Clashes

The Security and Defence Council (SDC) in Sudan has announced its decision to deploy a joint force including former rebels in Darfur to maintain security in the regions. An enhanced border control to prevent the flow of weapons is also in place.

The announcement follows violent tribal clashes in El Geneina, West Darfur state which killed 137 people and injured more than 230 others in early April. The unrest has resulted in authorities declaring a state of emergency and the United Nations suspending aid deliveries in the region.
