Morocco: Protest Scheduled in Rabat on 16 April

Activist groups in Morocco have called for a protest in front of Parliament in Rabat, at 16:00 on April 16, to demand the release of journalists Soulaiman Raissouni and Omar Radi. The journalists and activist groups claim that the charges against the journalists are politically motivated. The scheduled event is being held despite authorities banning any gatherings or protests due to the state of health emergency in the region.

Given the past precedent of anti-establishment protests in Rabat, clampdown on protesters and clashes between authorities and protesters is possible.

Advice For Travellers

Traffic disruption in the area of the Parliament building in Rabat is possible. To minimize safety risks, avoid areas of large public gatherings or protests. Even events intended to be peaceful can escalate unexpectedly and quickly become violent.
