COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Yemen (03 June Update)

*Can a resident enter the country? *

  • Yes

  • Citizens and residents are allowed to enter.

*Can a foreigner enter the country? *

  • No with exceptions

  • Foreign nationals may be allowed to enter Yemen for essential reasons only.

*Is transit allowed through the country? *

  • No with exceptions

  • Few land borders transit points are open for entry and exit.

*Is a test required on arrival? *

  • No with exceptions

  • On arrival thermal screening will be carried out.

  • Authorities have installed a PCR testing facility at Al Wadiah entry point for those who arrive without a PCR test certificate.

    (a) Stranded Yemenis returning from Saudi Arabia via the Al Wadiah border will be tested on arrival if they do not have a previous negative COVID-19 PCR certificate.

Is a test certificate allowed?

  • Yes

  • Certificates issued from foreign countries are allowed. The certificate must be in English.

*Test certificate required? *

  • Yes

  • Travellers must have a medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test report obtained within 72 hours before arrival. This does not apply to passengers younger than 10 years. The certificate must be in English.

  • Citizens of Yemen, who are returning from Saudi Arabia through the Al Wadiah border entry point, must carry a COVID-19 PCR test report.

  • Passengers departing Yemen may need a COVID-19 test certificate before boarding the flight as per the existing requirements in their destination country.

*Is quarantine required on arrival? *

  • Yes

  • Travellers arriving in Yemen are required to quarantine for 14-days at a designated location.

  • Some areas have designated camps for quarantine purposes. The quality of the quarantine camps and access to medical care may vary.

  • Based on the above restrictions, the traveller will be required to spend 14 days in quarantine.

Is Vaccination required?

  • No.

  • A vaccination for COVID-19 is not required for entry into the country.

Is Insurance required?

  • Proof of insurance coverage for COVID-19 expenses is not required to enter the country.

Airline restrictions

  • Significant

  • A very limited number of flights are operating from some airports including Aden and Seiyun International Airports. Passengers are advised to check with the airlines or travel agents directly for updates on the availability of flights.

  • Commercial flights are operating on a limited basis.

  • Sana’a International Airport has reopened for humanitarian flights.

Border restrictions

  • Significant

  • The majority of land, sea, and airports are closed, except for humanitarian purposes and movement of essential goods.

  • The border point (Al Wadiah) with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is also open for Yemeni returnees with preventive measures.

  • If a traveller stays more than 14 days in Yemen, they will need to register their passport with the immigration authorities.

Curfew restrictions

  • Minimal

  • A nationwide health emergency is in place.

  • Currently, no curfew is in effect, however, local governments may impose restrictions depending on the rise of infection rates.

Social distancing restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Authorities may impose a range of measures including a curfew, movement restrictions, and closure of businesses. The measures can change with short notice.

  • Mass gatherings remain banned.

Internal travel restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Movement between north and south governorates is restricted.

  • Health screenings will take place when transiting through certain points of Taizz and Al-Bayda.

  • In Southern governorates, all markets are allowed to open.

Accommodations open?

  • Yes

  • Hotels are allowed to open.

*Restaurants open? *

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Restaurants are allowed to open in Northern governorates.

*Bars and cafes open? *

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Cafeterias are open in Northern governorates.

Beaches and tourism sites open?

  • Yes

  • Some tourist places, including Socotra Island of Yemen, are open for tourism. Travellers must obtain a Yemeni Visa to visit the island.

Museums and heritage sites open?

  • Yes

  • Museums and heritage sites are open. Entry to some sites is restricted due to natural threats, such as flooding.

*Places of worship open? *

  • No with exceptions

  • Most mosques, group prayers, and other locations for prayers have been closed until further notice. In Hadramout province, mosques may reopen.

Other

  • Public parks and sports fields are allowed to open with strict social distancing measures.

Advice For Travellers

The COVID-19 epidemic is constantly changing worldwide. Travel and border restrictions may change with little or no notice. Airlines may have their own requirements for testing, masking, and distancing. It is recommended that travellers carry a supply of face masks since the requirement can vary by location. It is recommended that travellers practice social distancing and maintain a 6-foot distance from other individuals and avoid crowded areas.
