COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Tonga (13 April Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Citizens are allowed to enter.

Can a foreigner enter the country?

  • No

  • Foreign travellers cannot enter Tonga.

Is Test Certificate Required

  • No

  • A test certificate for COVID-19 is not required to enter Tonga.

Is quarantine required on arrival?

  • Yes

  • All travellers arriving in Tonga are required to quarantine for 21 days at a government-designated center.

  • Based on the above restrictions, all incoming travellers will be subjected to a minimum of 21 days of quarantine.

Vaccination Required

  • No

  • A vaccination for COVID-19 is not required for entry into the country.

Insurance Required

  • No

  • Proof of insurance coverage for COVID-19 expenses is not required to enter the country.

Airline restrictions

  • Total

  • International flights to Tonga are suspended except for specially arranged repatriation flights and international flights approved by the Ministry of Health.

Border restrictions

  • All travellers are prohibited from entering Tonga, except for Tongan citizens who have obtained permission from the Tongan Government Authorities and are returning by special arrangement.

  • All maritime borders are closed.

  • Cruise ships and yachts are banned from entering Tonga until further notice.

Curfew restrictions

  • The government of Tonga has extended the state of emergency until 10 May 2021. All ongoing restrictions will remain ongoing.

  • The government has imposed a curfew from midnight to 05:00 (local time).

Social distancing restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Social distancing measures of 1.5 meters and the use of face coverings are mandatory in public places. The use of gloves, garments, and equipment designed specifically to minimize infection is encouraged.

  • Mass gatherings must not exceed 100 people outdoors and 50 indoors, except for educational and religious services.

Non-essential shops open?

  • Yes

  • Non-essential businesses, including car sales, gyms, roadside vendors, crops, fisheries export industries, and construction companies, are open.

Bars and cafes open?

  • Clubs, liquor-licensed night clubs, bars, and kava clubs will open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 05:00 to 21:00 (local time).

Places of worship open?

  • Church services are allowed daily in the early morning and on Sundays. Restrictions on gatherings have not been applied to religious services.

Advice For Travellers
