COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in San Marino (18 April Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Citizens and residents can enter San Marino.

Can a foreigner enter the country?

  • No with exceptions

  • San Marino is landlocked by Italy. Until 30 April, entry into Italy is only permitted for those with official residency or those with absolute essential requirements. Currently, there are no additional restrictions imposed for San Marino, and anyone entering Italy is also allowed to enter San Marino.

  • Foreigners do not need a visa to visit San Marino. If staying in San Marino for less than 30 days in an official residence (i.e. hotel or bed and breakfast), a “permesso di soggiorno turistico” is not necessary. However, if staying privately, the traveller must report their stay to the Ufficio Stranieri (Foreigners’ Office) of the local Gendarmerie within 24 hours of arrival. If staying for work, a “permesso per motivi di lavoro” (a work permit), is necessary, which is issued for some categories of workers only.

  • Travellers who have stayed in a country other than Italy or Vatican City in the last 14 days prior to arrival in San Marino must present proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative COVID-19 PCR test result issued no longer than 48 hours before entry.

Is quarantine required on arrival?

  • Travellers arriving in Italy who test positive will be assigned to quarantine.

  • All arrivals must self isolate for 14 days when entering Italian territory. If anyone cannot self-isolate for 14 days for any reason, then entry to Italy may be refused.

  • Based on the above restrictions travellers will be required to spend zero to 14 days in quarantine.

Vaccination required?

  • Travellers who stayed in a country other than Italy or Vatican City in the last 14 days are allowed to enter the country upon presentation of a COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

Insurance required?

  • Proof of insurance coverage for COVID-19 expenses is not required to enter the country.

Travellers from Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, France, Malta, Spain, and Romania must also report prior to their intended arrival.

  • Public transport is currently operating in the country. The use of face coverings is mandatory while on public transport.

  • The movements to and from the Republic of San Marino in the regions, provinces, and municipalities, in which there are restrictive measures to contain a high epidemiological risk (so-called red and orange zones), are prohibited except for proven work needs, health reasons, or situations of necessity through self-certification.

  • Restaurants are open and must ensure that customers maintain a distance of at least one meter from each other. Only six people are permitted to sit together at a table and restaurants must close by 18:00 (local time). Take-away and home delivery services are allowed until 22:00 (local time).

Bars and cafes open?

  • Pubs and cafes are open. Businesses must ensure that customers maintain a distance of at least one meter from each other. Bars must close by 18:00 (local time). Anyone consuming food in a bar must be seated at a table.

  • Tourist attractions are open. Patrons must maintain a distance of at least one meter from each other.

Museums and heritage sites open?

  • Museums are closed to the public.

  • Face coverings are mandatory on public transport, in all indoor public spaces, and in outdoor spaces where it is not possible to maintain 1-metre social distancing.
