COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Mongolia (24 April Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Citizens and residents are allowed to enter.

*Can a foreigner enter the country? *

  • No with exceptions

  • Foreign nationals are not allowed to enter Mongolia until 30 April 2021.

  • Foreigners with a short term visa, such as business (B-type) visa, diplomatic (D-type) visa or official (A-type) visa issued on or after 8 October 2020 will be allowed to enter Mongolia.

  • Foreigners with long stay visas or residency are also allowed to return to Mongolia.

Is a test required on arrival?

  • No

  • COVID-19 tests are not conducted on arrival. Travellers are subject to health screening on arrival.

Is a test certificate accepted?

  • Yes

  • Test certificates obtained outside the country are accepted.

Test certificate required?

  • Yes

  • All incoming passengers are required to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival and either:

  • Present valid evidence of having received a full vaccination course against COVID-19 and then self-isolate after arrival for 7 days. Or,

  • Undertake 7 days quarantine in an approved hotel. PCR tests will be taken on the 5th and 7th days of quarantine. No further isolation will be required if those tests return negative results.

*Is quarantine required on arrival? *

  • Yes

  • Eligible travellers are subject to a 7-day mandatory quarantine. COVID-19 tests will be performed on the 5th and 7th days during the quarantine period. Travellers may be required to self-isolate for another 7 days in their home.

  • Based on the above restrictions, the traveller will be required to spend between ‘7’ and ‘14’ days in quarantine.

Vaccination Required

  • No

  • A vaccination for COVID-19 is not required for entry into the country.

Insurance Required?

  • No.

  • Proof of insurance coverage for COVID-19 expenses is not required to enter the country.

Airline restrictions

  • Significant

  • All international flights will remain suspended until at least 30 April 2021.

  • International commercial flights will start operating from May at limited numbers

  • Domestic flights have resumed operations.

Border restrictions

  • Significant

  • The borders will be closed until 30 April 2021.

  • All rail and auto traffic to and from Mongolia will remain suspended until at least 30 April 2021.

  • Foreigners are not allowed to travel through the land border crossings with Russia.

  • Land borders between China and Mongolia will remain closed until further notice.

Curfew restrictions

  • Significant

  • The authority has imposed a strict nationwide lockdown until May 8 .

Social restrictions

  • Significant

  • Gatherings are prohibited during the nationwide lockdown.

  • Temperature screenings and face masks are compulsory in public places and offices.

Internal travel restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Masks are required.

  • In Ulaanbaatar, people are advised to stay home, except for essential or emergency reasons.

  • Travel in and out of Ulaanbaatar will remain restricted.

  • Travellers arriving from provinces with no COVID-19 transmission are allowed to enter after filling up a health questionnaire.

  • Travellers from the affected provinces are subject to PCR test.

  • All shops and market places can operate until 20:00.

*Accommodations open? *

  • Yes

  • Hotels are open.

  • Anyone entering a hotel may have their temperature checked.

*Restaurants open? *

  • No with exceptions.

  • Restaurants are not allowed to open, except for delivery services.

*Bars and cafes open? *

  • Yes

  • Bars are allowed to open with reduced capacity.

*Beaches and tourism sites open? *

  • No with exceptions

  • All attractions and sightseeing are closed until further notice.

*Museums and heritage sites open? *

  • No

  • Museums are closed.

*Personal care services open? *

  • Yes

  • Personal care services, such as hair and beauty salons, massage centers are open with limited operations only on weekdays.

*Places of worship open? *

  • Yes

  • Places of worship are open. Religious activities are allowed to resume on a limited basis.

*Events allowed? *

  • Yes

  • Public events (e.g. gatherings, demonstrations, competitions, weddings, receptions) are allowed with social distancing protocols.

*Masks required in public? *

  • Yes

  • Wearing a face mask is mandatory. Those violating this requirement may be subject to a penalty.

Advice For Travellers

The COVID-19 epidemic is constantly changing worldwide. Travel and border restrictions may change with little or no notice. Airlines may have their own requirements for testing, masking, and distancing. It is recommended that travellers carry a supply of face masks since the requirement can vary by location. It is recommended that travellers practice social distancing and maintain a 6-foot distance other individuals and avoid crowded areas.
