COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Slovakia (21 July Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Citizens and legal residents are allowed to enter the country.

Can a foreigner enter the country?

  • Yes, with exceptions

  • EU citizens are allowed to enter Slovakia.

  • Foreigners who have entered the Schengen area legally may enter Slovakia through its internal borders with Austria, Czechia, Hungary, or Poland, as well as by air at airports in Slovakia for flights from within the Schengen Area under the condition of compliance with other measures, such as testing or home isolation.

  • The following persons can enter Slovakia via external borders (border with Ukraine as well as for flights from outside the Schengen Area):

  • Persons related to a Slovak citizen or to a temporary/permanent resident in Slovakia, i.e. spouse, minor child, parent of a minor child. Proof of relationship must be provided with a document such as a birth certificate or marriage certificate.

  • Holders of a national visa issued by the Embassy of the Slovak Republic. Third-country nationals entering for the purpose of attending nursery or study at a primary, secondary, or higher education institution in Slovakia and demonstrating confirmation of this fact are considered to have a valid residence and may enter.

  • Persons providing care for close relatives, transiting travellers and other special circumstances if allowed on the travel registration here.

  • Holders of an exemption in accordance with the PHA Decree. Details can be found in this link.

  • Persons with permanent or temporary residence in Australia, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Israel, China (special administrative regions of China: Hong Kong, Macau).

  • Persons who meet conditions stipulated by law who are not required to obtain a temporary residence permit for the period up to 90 days from the beginning of the stay in Slovakia (temporary residence types: study, employment, special activity, research and development, residence permit of a person with long-term residence status in another member state). The purpose of the stay when entering Slovakia must be proved by presenting credible documents.

Is transit allowed through the country?

Is a test required on arrival?

  • No

  • Persons over 12 years of age entering Slovakia by air from countries not listed in the Annex need a negative result of the RT-PCR test for COVID-19 not older than 72 hours.

Is quarantine required on arrival?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Travellers entering Slovakia must undergo isolation in their home environment or a quarantine accommodation facility. The traveller’s isolation will end if they have no symptoms by the 14th day of their isolation or they obtain a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test result. The test can be performed on the fifth day of isolation at the earliest. Isolation of children under the age of twelve terminates when the isolation of persons living with them in the same household terminates, providing the children remain asymptomatic. During the period of home isolation, isolation is also obligatory for people living in the same household.

  • The Isolation does not apply to:

  • Fully vaccinated persons.

  • Persons aged 12 - 18, provided that no person in the same household is subject to the isolation duty (until 9 August 2021).

  • Persons specified in 5 to 7 Decree.

  • Persons providing transport of other persons to/from international airports in Austria, Czechia, Hungary or Poland are exempt from the quarantine obligations if they register at the naletisko.mzv.sk website before crossing the Slovak border and are able to demonstrate at the request of a police officer that they have a printed or electronic confirmation of registration and the ticket for transportation or an electronic copy.

  • An exemption from compulsory isolation is also granted to persons with a permanent or temporary residence in Slovakia who leave Slovakia for less than 12 hours due to the need to visit an embassy/consulate accredited for the Slovak Republic located in the Czech Republic, Hungary or Austria.

  • The isolation of persons who received a dose of COVID-19 vaccine by 9 July 2021 and who enter the territory of the Slovak Republic no later than 2 August 2021 by 6:00 (local time), can be ended by presenting a negative result of an RT-PCR test performed on the first day of isolation.

  • All members of a household must self-quarantine with the traveller until either the traveller receives negative test results or completes 14 days of self-quarantine.

  • Based on the above restrictions, arriving travellers will either be exempted from quarantine or required to enter quarantine for a maximum of 14 days, depending on their travel history.

  • No

  • A vaccination for COVID-19 is not required for entry into the country.

Advice For Travellers

The COVID-19 epidemic is constantly changing worldwide. Travel and border restrictions may change with little or no notice. Airlines may have their own requirements for testing, masking, and distancing. It is recommended that travellers carry a supply of face masks since the requirement can vary by location. It is recommended that travellers practise social distancing, maintain a 6-foot distance from other individuals and avoid crowded areas.
