COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Mozambique (19 July Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Citizens and residents are allowed to enter the country.

Can a foreigner enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Entry to Mozambique is allowed for all travellers with a valid tourist, business, or residency visa.

  • Issuance of visas on arrival has been reinstated for tourists. Tourists must have proof of a return ticket and a hotel booking. It may be helpful to obtain a visa at the nearest Mozambican embassy or consulate prior to travel.

  • Business travellers who do not have a valid DIRE and/or visa(s) must obtain prior authorization from the Ministry of Interior via a letter addressed to “Sua Excelência Secretário Permanente do Ministério do Interior”. The letter should include the following information: (1) Traveller name and passport details; (2) Date and time of arrival; (3) Flight information/travel itinerary; (4) Purpose of travel to Mozambique. The letter should be submitted to the Secretaria Geral do Ministério do Interior located at Avenida Olof Palme 46/48, Maputo, Mozambique. Allow 7 days for the Ministry to consider the request. Once the request has been approved by the Ministry of Interior, the traveller will be instructed to apply for a visa at the nearest Mozambican embassy or consulate.

Is a test required on arrival?

  • No with exceptions

  • Travellers will be subject to medical screening and may be tested upon arrival at their own expense.

  • Airline crew are subject to medical screening upon arrival.

Is a test certificate accepted?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Test certificates issued outside of Mozambique will be accepted if issued in English, French, or Portuguese.

Test certificate required?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • All arriving passengers will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate issued within 72 hours prior to arrival. Children below 5 years of age are exempted from the pre-departure test requirement.

  • For purposes of land border crossings, COVID-19 tests remain valid for 7 days for those requiring multiple entries over a short period of time or leaving Mozambique for a short duration.

Is quarantine required on arrival?

  • No with exceptions

  • All incoming travellers with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result are exempt from quarantine requirements.

  • All persons who test positive for COVID-19 or who have been directly exposed to a positive case of COVID-19 must enter quarantine for 14 days.

  • Airline crews are subject to medical screening and will be required to quarantine until their next flight.

  • Based on the above restrictions, all incoming travellers will be quarantined for a minimum of 0 days up to a maximum of 14 days of quarantine.

  • Travellers will be required to provide contact details to Mozambique authorities upon arrival.

Is vaccination required?

  • No

  • A vaccination for COVID-19 is not currently required for entering Mozambique.

Insurance required?

  • No

  • Proof of insurance coverage for COVID-19 expenses is not required to enter the country

Airline restrictions

  • Minimal

  • Authorities have resumed international commercial passenger flights at a reduced capacity.

  • Domestic flights are operating.

Border restrictions

  • Minimal

  • Arrivals must ensure they have proper visas prior to arrival.

  • Health screening measures have been introduced at entry and exit points.

Curfew restrictions

  • Moderate

  • A state of public calamity will remain in force until further notice. This will entail the enforcement of travel and other restrictions to contain the spread of COVID-19.

  • A curfew is in force between 21:00-04:00 (local time) in all provincial capitals and some district capitals (Chokwe, Gondola, Moatize, Mocuba, Maxixe, Cuamba, Manhiça, Montepuez, Massinga, and Nacala) until further notice.

Social restrictions

  • Moderate

  • A social distance of two meters must be maintained in all situations.

  • Indoor gatherings are limited to 15 people and outdoor gatherings are limited to 30 people.

Internal travel restrictions

  • Minimal

  • Face masks are mandatory on public transport.

  • Motorbike-taxis and bicycle-taxis are now allowed on roads but are restricted to one passenger.

  • Buses and minibuses are operating.

Non-essential shops open?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • All commercial establishments are allowed to operate from 09:00-16:00 (local time) from Monday to Saturday, and on Sunday, operations are permitted between 09:00-13:00 (local time).

Accommodations open?

  • No with exceptions

  • Some hotels and other accommodations are closed. Travellers are advised to reconfirm the hotel reservation before undertaking travel due to closures.

Restaurants open?

  • Yes

  • Restaurants are allowed to provide services for limited hours.

Bars and cafes open?

  • Yes

  • Bars and cafes are open for reduced hours.

Beaches and tourism sites open?

  • No

  • Beaches are closed.

Museums and heritage sites open?

  • Yes

  • Museums are open with reduced capacity.

  • Gyms, public swimming pools and other non-essential personal care services are closed.

Places of worship open?

  • No with exceptions

  • All religious services remain suspended.

Events allowed?

  • No

  • All conferences and celebrations are suspended until further notice.

  • A maximum of 20 people are allowed to attend weddings or funerals.

Masks required in public?

  • Yes

  • Wearing face coverings is compulsory in all public spaces including markets, public transport, along roadsides, hotels, and other accommodations.

Other

  • Schools and higher education establishments are closed until further notice.

Advice For Travellers

The COVID-19 epidemic is constantly changing worldwide. Travel and border restrictions may change with little or no notice. Airlines may have their own requirements for testing, masking, and distancing. It is recommended that travellers carry a supply of face masks since the requirement can vary by location. It is recommended that travellers practise social distancing, maintain a 6-foot distance from other individuals and avoid crowded areas. Check with your airline, booking agent, or country's embassy for information on your specific travel plans.
