COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Belize (14 July Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Citizens and residents are allowed to enter.

Can a foreigner enter the country?

  • Yes, with exceptions.

  • Travellers are allowed to enter Belize. However, Belize has placed a temporary ban for anyone who originated from, recently travelled to, or transited through India or Bangladesh.

Is a test required on arrival?

  • No with exceptions

  • On arrival, every traveller will undergo health screening and temperature checks.

  • Travellers who arrive without a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate issued within 96 hours before arrival will have to undergo a rapid antigen test upon arrival at their own expense.

  • The airport authorities may randomly select any individual for testing on arrival.

Is a test certificate allowed?

  • Yes

  • Test certificates issued outside of Belize are accepted.

Test certificate required?

  • Yes

  • Passengers above the age of 5 years, must have a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate issued within 96 hours before departure or a negative rapid antigen test result obtained within 48 hours before departure for Belize. The result must be presented to board the flight. A copy received via email from the testing facility will be accepted.

  • Fully vaccinated travellers are not required to submit a PCR or Antigen test certificate. These travellers must provide proof (vaccine card or other official digital or printed notice) of full immunization (receiving all required doses of the COVID-19 vaccine more than 14 days before arrival).

Is quarantine required on arrival?

  • No with exceptions

  • Travellers who have a positive COVID-19 test result on arrival are subject to a 14-day quarantine at their pre-booked hotel or approved quarantine hotel only until cleared by health officials.

  • Travellers coming for tourism only must have a confirmed reservation at an approved “Gold Standard” hotel. Details can be found here.

  • Based on the above restrictions, all incoming travellers will be required to spend between 0 days and 14 days in quarantine.

  • Passengers are no longer required to download the “Belize Health App”.

Is Vaccination required?

  • No

  • A vaccination for COVID-19 is not required for entry into Belize. However, fully vaccinated passengers are not required to submit a PCR or Antigen test certificate.

Is Insurance required?

  • No

  • Proof of insurance coverage for COVID-19 expenses is not required to enter the country.

Airline restrictions

  • Moderate

  • The Philip Goldson International airport (BZE) has reopened.

  • Direct flights between Belize and the United Kingdom are available.

  • Temperature screening will be done on arrival at the airport.

Border restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Belize has reopened for tourists within the tourism safe corridor (via international airports only).

  • Land borders are open for tourism. Tourists may enter via the northern and western land borders for recreation and vacation purposes only. Tourists will be able to enter Belize from Chetumal, Mexico, and Peten, Guatemala.

Curfew restrictions

  • Moderate

  • A curfew is in effect between 22:00 and 04:00 from Sunday to Wednesday. From Thursday to Saturday, the curfew is from 23:00 to 04:00.

  • No individual (except essential workers and officials) will be allowed to remain on the streets or in any public place during the curfew hours.

Social restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Public gatherings of more than ten people are not allowed.

  • A social distance of six feet must be maintained between people.

  • Violation of the social distancing measures may lead to penalties and possible imprisonment for up to one year.

Internal travel restrictions

  • Minimal

  • Public transportation, both inter and intra-district, is allowed to operate with reduced capacity and social distancing mandates.

Non-essential shops open?

  • Yes

  • Shops are allowed to open social distancing mandates.

Accommodations open?

  • Yes

  • Hotels and other rental accommodations are allowed to open. Tourists must follow the safety measures, which include staying at a hotel or guesthouse that falls within the “Safe Tourism Corridor” and has a Tourism Gold Standard Certificate of Recognition.

Restaurants open?

  • Yes

  • Restaurants can operate with a reduced capacity of 50 per cent indoors and 75 per cent outdoors.

  • Dining in a restaurant is available only by reservation.

Bars and cafes open?

  • No

  • Pubs, bars, discos, or other shops selling alcoholic beverages are closed until further notice.

Beaches and tourism sites open?

  • Yes

  • Tourism has resumed.

  • ATM Cave, Nohoch Che'en, and Barton Creek caves are open.

Museums and heritage sites open?

  • Yes

  • Most heritage sites, including archaeological reserves, are open.

Personal care services open?

  • Yes

  • Barbershops, spas, and personal care services are allowed to open with advance appointments only.

Places of worship open?

  • Yes

  • Church or any services of worship with a limited number of persons are permitted.

Events allowed?

  • No with exceptions

  • Private parties with people outside the household are not allowed.

  • Wedding events are allowed with limited capacity, as per the government regulations.

  • Funeral ceremonies are allowed with a limited number of people.

Masks required in public?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Except for children under six years of age, face masks are compulsory for every individual in public places, institutions, and offices.

Other

  • Gyms, casinos and gaming establishments are open.

  • Schools and in-person classes are suspended, however, schools may operate online.

  • Government offices are open.

  • Playgrounds or public parks are not allowed to open.

  • Recreational contact sports and any type of competitive sports are prohibited.

  • Cycling, running, walking and non-contact sports, such as tennis, golf and similar sports are allowed with social distancing measures.

Advice For Travellers

The COVID-19 epidemic is constantly changing worldwide. Travel and border restrictions may change with little or no notice. Airlines may have their own requirements for testing, masking, and distancing. It is recommended that travellers carry a supply of face masks since the requirement can vary by location. It is recommended that travellers practice social distancing and maintain a 6-foot distance other individuals and avoid crowded areas.
