COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Tonga (8 July Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Citizens are allowed to enter.

Can a foreigner enter the country?

  • No

  • Foreign travellers cannot enter Tonga except under special circumstances, such as repatriation, and permission from the Government of Tonga.

Is a test certificate accepted?

  • Yes.

  • Test certificates issued outside of Tonga are accepted.

  • Travellers will be required to undergo three COVID-19 tests - the first on arrival, the second on day 12-14, and the third test on day 20-21. All three tests must yield negative results for passengers to be released from quarantine.

  • Travellers are required to present a negative COVID-19 test result taken at least 72 hours prior to arrival in Tonga.

Is quarantine required on arrival?

  • All travellers arriving in Tonga are required to quarantine for 21 days** at a government-designated centre.

  • Based on the above restrictions, all incoming travellers will be subjected to a minimum of 21 days of quarantine.

  • All travelers shall complete the Traveler’s Arrival Health Declaration Card and provide it to the Ministry of Health Border Control Team upon request.

  • All travellers are prohibited from entering Tonga, except for Tongan citizens who have obtained permission from the Tongan Government authorities and are returning by special arrangement.

  • All maritime borders are closed.

  • Cruise ships and yachts are banned from entering Tonga until further notice.

  • The government of Tonga has extended the state of emergency until 2 August 2021. All ongoing restrictions will remain in effect.

  • The government has imposed a curfew from midnight to 05:00 (local time).

  • Social distancing measures of 1.5 meters and the use of face coverings are mandatory in public places. The use of gloves, garments, and equipment designed specifically to minimize infection is encouraged.

  • Non-essential businesses, including car sales, gyms, roadside vendors, crops, fisheries export industries, and construction companies, are open.

Bars and cafes open?

  • Clubs, liquor-licensed nightclubs, bars, and kava clubs will open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 05:00 to 21:00 (local time).

Advice For Travellers

The COVID-19 epidemic is constantly changing worldwide. Travel and border restrictions may change with little or no notice. Airlines may have their own requirements for testing, masking, and distancing. It is recommended that travellers carry a supply of face masks since the requirement can vary by location. It is recommended that travellers practice social distancing and maintain a 6-foot distance other individuals and avoid crowded areas.
